Chang Kai-chen (張凱貞) recovered from the disappointment of losing the singles final to come out on top in a Taiwanese showdown and claim the doubles title at the Jiangxi Women’s Tennis Open in Nanchang, China, yesterday.
Chang and Zheng Saisai (鄭賽賽) of China defeated Chan Chin-wei (詹謹偉) of Taiwan and Wang Yafan (王雅芳) of China 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 at the WTA Tour 125K tournament.
Third seeds Chang and Zheng saved three of seven break points and converted all four they created against the top seeds, winning 64 of the 119 points contested in 1 hour, 27 minutes at the Nanchang International Sports Center.
It was Chang’s fifth WTA Tour doubles title and her first since Kuala Lumpur in 2013.
In the singles final earlier yesterday, Chang was overpowered 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) by former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.
In the first set, the world No. 25 broke Chang’s serve four times, taking advantage of the Taiwanese player’s four double faults.
Jankovic, who also won her only previous match against Chang at the Australian Open in 2012, broke the Chang serve again in the second set and looked odds on to wrap up the match when she was serving with a 5-3 lead, but the Taiwanese broke back and went on to force a tiebreak.
The 24-year-old world No. 191, who reached a career-high 82nd in the rankings in 2010, managed to save match point at 6-5 in the tiebreak, but she could not prevent Jankovic converting at the second attempt as the Serbian completed the victory in 1 hour, 58 minutes to claim her 14th WTA Tour singles title.
